History

Members on an outing

In 1999, a group of friends gathered to strategize ways they could remain rooted and involved in their Beacon Hill community. Recognizing that support may be needed in the future and social networks change as we age, they looked beyond conventional solutions.

They developed an innovative community-based approach that empowers adults at all stages, giving them a voice and a choice about how best to live a fulfilling life.

A self-governing, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, Beacon Hill Village enrolled its first members in 2002. Today, our members include those who live in the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Downtown/Waterfront, Fenway/Kenmore, and the North, South, and West End neighborhoods.

Beacon Hill Village runs on social capital and member energy. This village concept, built on the idea that together we're stronger, emphasizes peer-to-peer networking to promote an active lifestyle, improve health and reduce isolation.

Membership is backed by an expert staff, dedicated volunteers, and strategic partners. The staff and member-led committees collaborate to develop and deliver programs and services that reflect the needs and preferences of our members. The staff manages and updates a network of vetted resources and a database of service providers to help members navigate life transitions with up-to-date information.

As the founder of what grew to become the Village Movement: a global network of neighbors helping neighbors, we are also social innovators empowering older adults throughout our country, city, and neighborhood.

Together we're creating what's next in our lives.
