What’s all the buzz? Join Dr. Shmerling – retired clinician, educator and researcher – for a reality check. He will provide a broad overview of inflammation: what it is, how it can help or hurt and why we are hearing so much about it. Dr. Shmerling will then discuss the relationship between chronic inflammation and chronic disease, providing examples where the relationship is clear and others where it’s less certain. Finally, he will review measures most likely to calm chronic, harmful inflammation and discuss how future research may clarify novel ways to address it.
Dr. Robert H. Shmerling mixed clinical care, teaching and research throughout his distinguished career. He served as Clinical Chief of Rheumatology and Rheumatology Fellowship Program Director at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for many years until retiring from clinical practice in 2020. His research interests have centered on diagnostic studies in patients with musculoskeletal symptoms, rheumatic and autoimmune diseases. He has had extensive teaching responsibilities within BIDMC and Harvard Medical School including supervising residents and fellows in the rheumatology practice. Currently, he is a Senior Faculty Editor at Harvard Health Publishing, the consumer health education division of Harvard Medical School.
